Join Duncan Moran, Middle School Langauge Arts and Social Studies Teacher, in an open forum of dialogue and discussion of Julie Lythcott-Haims’ How to Raise an Adult. The first meeting will be an introduction to the book and an open conversation about parenting styles, values, and methodologies in the United States that have changed through the years and between generations. Be sure to purchase a copy of your book and read the introduction prior to our first gathering on August 12th. Meetings will take place outdoors on Pathfinder’s Campus. In the case of inclement weather, the meeting will be held in the library. These meetings are open to the entire community, no Pathfinder affiliation is needed.

First Meeting: August 12th, 6:30pm

Third Meeting: October 21st, 6:30pm

How to Raise an Adult

“Relevant to parents of toddlers as well as of twentysomethings, this book is a rallying cry for those who wish to ensure that the next generation can take charge of their own lives with competence and confidence”

Drawing on research, from conversations with admissions officers, educators, and employers, and on her own insights as a mother and as a student dean, Julie highlights the ways in which overparenting harms children, their stressed-out parents, and society at large.

While empathizing with the parental hopes and, especially, fears that lead to overhelping, Julie offers practical strategies that underline the importance of allowing children to make their own mistakes and develop the resilience, resourcefulness, and inner determination necessary for success.
